Age at fledge 90 days
Band Not banded

Sunny was the larger of the two surviving chicks from Jackie and Shadow's historic 2025 triple hatch — hatched from the egg laid on January 25. After sibling Misty was lost to a snowstorm, Sunny and Gizmo became inseparable — eating, sleeping, and exploring the nest together.

FOBBV determined Sunny was likely female based on ankle size and vocal pitch analysis (not genetic testing). She was the first to take the leap, fledging on June 2, 2025 at 90 days old.

Band Not banded

Gizmo was the youngest of the three 2025 chicks, hatching from the egg laid on January 28. FOBBV determined Gizmo was likely female using ankle size and vocal pitch analysis. She fledged just five days after Sunny, on June 7, 2025 at 91 days old.

Together with Sunny, Gizmo marked a historic milestone: the first time Jackie and Shadow fledged two chicks in the same season. Both eaglets were seen flying together over Big Bear Lake — a sight that brought tears to many long-time cam watchers.

Lost to Storm
Hatched Mar 3, 2025
Lost ~Mar 13, 2025

Misty was the first chick to hatch from Jackie and Shadow's rare three-egg clutch (from the egg laid January 22). Named after Kathi Misterly, a beloved long-time FOBBV volunteer who had recently passed away from cancer — this naming was a direct FOBBV decision rather than a community vote.

Tragically, Misty was lost during a multi-day snowstorm around March 13. FOBBV noted nest-bowl visibility issues from snow berm and a damaged microphone during the storm. Visual confirmation came when Shadow removed the deceased chick and Jackie later flew it away from the nest.

Fledged May 31, 2022
Band Not banded

Spirit arrived after two heartbreaking seasons (2019–20 and 2020–21) where none of Jackie and Shadow's eggs hatched. The community celebrated Spirit's birth with enormous joy.

Spirit won hearts worldwide with an adorable quirk: she adopted her unhatched sibling egg as a "security blanket", nudging it around the nest and sitting near it for comfort. This behavior, while not unique in the bird world, was captured beautifully on the live cam and went viral on social media.

Spirit fledged successfully on May 31, 2022, soaring off the nest to the cheers of thousands of live viewers.

Band #ZR1

Simba was the first chick of Jackie and Shadow's partnership — making him extra special to the eagle-watching community. He and sibling Cookie hatched together.

After Cookie was lost to a storm, Simba grew strong as a solo chick and fledged on July 23, 2019. He was banded #ZR1, allowing biologists to track him after he left Big Bear.

Sadly, Simba was found deceased elsewhere in California approximately one year after fledging. The first year is the most dangerous for young eagles — approximately 30% don't survive it.

Lost ~6 weeks old
Band #ZJ1

Cookie was Simba's sibling and had been banded #ZJ1 before being lost. Determined to be male, Cookie did not survive a rain/snowstorm that hit the nest when the chick was approximately 6 weeks old.

Big Bear's 6,752-foot elevation means spring storms can bring brutal conditions to the nest — a recurring challenge for the eagles.

Stormy
2017–2018 Season • Jackie & Mr. B
Fledged ✓ Deceased Band #JR1
Hatched Early 2018
Fledged Apr 26, 2018
Band #JR1 (Purple)

Stormy was the first Big Bear eagle chick visible on the live cam — and became a media sensation. The U.S. Forest Service held press events, local news covered the story, and thousands tuned in daily to watch Stormy grow.

Stormy was the chick of Jackie and her first mate, Mr. B. Sibling BBB was tragically lost during a storm, but Stormy survived, was banded #JR1 (purple band), and fledged on April 26, 2018.

Sadly, Stormy was found deceased elsewhere in California approximately one year later. Her band allowed biologists to confirm her identity. Despite her short life, Stormy inspired thousands of people to care about bald eagle conservation.

BBB (Big Bear Baby)
2017–2018 Season • Jackie & Mr. B
Lost to Storm
Hatched Early 2018
Lost ~6.5 weeks old

BBB — short for Big Bear Baby — was Stormy's sibling. Tragically, BBB was lost during a severe 24-hour rainstorm followed by freezing temperatures when the chick was approximately 6.5 weeks old.

BBB's loss was the first major heartbreak for the Big Bear eagle cam community, and it highlighted the harsh realities of nesting at high altitude. The community rallied around Stormy's survival.

🕊️ In Memory

We remember Stormy, BBB, Cookie, Simba, and Misty — each one a part of Big Bear's eagle story. Their short lives taught us about the beauty, fragility, and resilience of nature. They are not forgotten.
